結論から言うと、
日本語の「試験」は test と examination（exam）どちらでもかまいません！
test と examination (exam) は基本的に置き換えが可能で、
意味の上で大きな差はないですが、ニュアンスが違います。
しかし、quiz は２つと明らかに異なるので、注意が必要です。

3つの単語の違いを大まかに説明すると以下のようになります。
「厳密な試験」を意味する examination / exam
「基準を測る試験」を意味する test
「かんたんな試験」を意味する quiz
それでは、各単語について詳しくみていきましょう！
「厳密な試験」を意味する examination、略語のexam
動詞 examine から派生した名詞で、基本的な意味は「診察する、考察する」で、念入りに細かく吟味することを指します。そのため、detailed（詳細な）や closely（綿密に）と一緒に用いることが多いです。
exam より examination の方がより正式でフォーマルに聞こえます。exam, examination は test より比較的に大きく重要な試験のこと指します。

The final exam is coming up, and I’m so not ready!
期末テスト近づいてるけど、全然準備できてない！
（期末試験は the finals とも言えます。the finals は他にも「決勝戦」を意味します。）
exam, examination, test はいずれも学校の試験以外に「検査・調査」を指します。
I had a blood test(exam, examination) today, and the doctor told me I was in good condition.
今日血液検査をしたけど、お医者さんによると健康に異常はないようだ。

test は examination よりややカジュアルに聞こえ、examination よりも少し小さなテストを指すことが多いです。

筆記テストと面接に合格したものだけ、この職につく資格がある。
（筆記テストは writing test ではなく、written test なので注意！）
test は動詞で用いることが可能で、「試験する、検査する、実験する」などの意味があります。

「かんたんな試験」を意味する quiz
quiz は、成績にさほど反映されないような小さく簡単なテストを指します。ですから、大学試験や期末試験には quiz は使いません！！抜き打ちテストは pop quiz と言います。
My science teacher likes to do a quiz at the beginning of every class, and I hate them.
私の理科の先生は毎回授業の始まりにミニテストをするけど、すごくめんどくさい。
